2016 has completed its half way journey and for Bollywood, this first half of the year has gone fantastic. In this post, I will write about Bollywood’s 5 most profitable movies of 2016.
The year started off with Akshay Kumar starrer Airlift, which was based on a real-life event of the biggest ever evacuation of the Indians from war prone Kuwait. Made with the budget of around Rs 40 crores ($6.01 million), Airlift had finished its lifetime run at the box office with Rs 127.80 crores ($19.21 million) and became one of the most profitable movies of 2016.
Airlift was also first 100 crore grosser of 2016 and enjoyed the title of the highest-grossing Bollywood movie of the year for 6 months before Salman Khan’s Sultan surpassed its lifetime collections in July.
In February, Sonam Kapoor had come up with an intense film Neerja, which was also a real life film based on flight attendant Neerja Bhanot, who lost her life in a plane hijack by the terrorists. Neerja received a wonderful response from the audience and moved to the top spot in the most profitable Bollywood movies of 2016.
The next movie is Karan Johar’s family drama Kapoor and Sons that featured Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, and Fawad Khan. With the cost of production, the film was made with Rs 37 crores ($5.56 million) and with the superb response from the people, it brought in its numbers to Rs 75.05 crores ($11.28 million), means profit is more than double its making cost.
On 6th of July, Salman Khan starrer the most awaited film of the year Sultan had hit the silver screens and as expected, it stormed the box office with mind boggling footfalls. The whole country gripped with Salmania and the result is that Sultan has grossed more than Rs 200 crore in just 12 days of its release.
Below, we are providing you the list of Top 5 most profitable Bollywood movies of 2016.
Sunny Deol starrer action packed film ‘Ghayal Once Again’ has yesterday hit the screens. This is the most ambitious film of Sunny, who has given his 2 years to this project, but Day one of the film at the box office was not upto the expectations of the makers. It has only collected Rs 7.20 crore, which is considered as a moderate start.
‘Ghayal Once Again’ is the sequel of Sunny’s 1990 hit action-drama ‘Ghayal’, that was the blockbuster. The makers have tried their best to co-relate this second installment with the earlier one, but they have failed to match up the similar heights what ‘Ghayal’ achieved. Although, Sunny this time has taken the extra responsibility of writing and direction of the film but the critics had not given positive response to this action-packed film.
On day one, the occupancies were around 40-50 percent and there was not seen any kind of buzz about Sunny’s film as it was happened earlier. Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Airlift’ is still strong after its 3rd week and giving tough fight to ‘Ghayal Once Again’. The other release of the week ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ had got average reviews and done just par business on day one.
It has said that Sunny has invested a big amount of his life in making of this film and he had to mortgage his Mumbai studio for the film but the way day one went, it is not good news for Sunny as he had expected more than this.
Now, all eyes are on coming weekend which is very crucial for ‘Ghayal Once Again’ and Sunny. The collections would surely gone better and anything around Rs 30 crore plus weekend will ease the pressure from the distributors but for that, the film has to do exceptionally well in coming two days.
As Expected, last week’s released ‘Main Aur Charles’ and ‘Guddu Ki Gun’ has disappointed at the domestic box office on its first weekend. Both the films have finished its first weekend collections at Rs 2 crore, which is a below par figure.
Randeep Hooda starrer ‘Main Aur Charles’ has got much hyped as it is based on the life of ‘Bikini Killer’ Charles Shobraj and Randeep’s performance has also appreciated by the people but it didn’t reflect in the box office numbers. Released in more than 1000 screens across the country, the film just managed to reach 2 crore mark.
On the other hand, Kunal Khemu’s ‘Guddu Ki Gun’ has the same result and this ‘Sex Comedy’ has shattered at the box office. Film’s bold content is the main reason behind this dull performance as less number of people came to watch this film.
With the way, these two performed on the first weekend, everyone knew that it hardly sustain in the theatres and people would easily forget these disastrous film.
This week, there are two films hit the silver screens. Randeep Hooda starrer ‘Main Aur Charles’ and ‘Guddu Ki Gun’ featuring Kunal Khemu in lead role. As expected, these two films have opened with much lower occupancies on first day at the box office and received very less number of people.
Prawaal Raman’s thriller ‘Main Aur Charles’, which is based on the life of ‘Bikini Killer’ Charles Shobraj had got the mixed reviews from the critics and it reflects from the day one collections of the film which according to the earlier reports, have remained around Rs1 crore. These average numbers could possible because of some better responses from the North Indian circuit where it got more than 20% occupancies. Although, Randeep’s performance in the film has been appreciated by the audience but it couldn’t show by seeing these dull figures. It could have done better on the next two days due to less competition.
The other release of the week is a sex comedy ‘Guddu Ki Gun’ in which Kunal Khemu is playing the role of a Bihari boy whose private part has turned into gold. The film has shown much lower occupancies around 5-10% and it has just finished the day around Rs 50 Lakhs which is expected from this lesser known film. Now, it will be an achievement for the film if it will recover its cost of production.
Finally Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has made her comeback into silver screens with action-thriller ‘Jazbaa’ and as per the expectation, the film had done well at the domestic box-office on its opening day. The Friday collections of ‘Jazbaa’ stand at Rs 4.23 crore.
Directed by Sanjay Gupta, ‘Jazbaa’ released yesterday with around 2200 screens across the country. The morning and afternoon occupancies were between 35- 40%. While, the film had picked up in the evening and night shows due to the Weekend eve.
Although, ‘Jazbaa’ got the mixed reviews and the critics didn’t impress with Aishwarya’s performance as they expected but the people welcomed her and reached in good numbers to see her. Aish is playing the role of a clever lawyer who fought with her daughter’s kidnapper. Irrfan Khan is played the role of a retired police officer who helped her to find her daughter.
With this opening figure, ‘Jazbaa’ has already become the best performer among this year’s women centric films surpassing Anushka Sharma starrer NH-10 which done a business of Rs 3.35 crore.
Now, the further journey of ‘Jazbaa’ at the box office depends upon the word of mouth form audience. The film will definitely show growth and would probably raked around Rs 15-20 crore after its first weekend.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan starrer ‘Jazbaa’ is hitting the silver screens this Friday. She is making her comeback after 5 years. ‘Jazbaa’ is a suspense-thriller which also stars Irrfan Khan, Jacky Shroff and Shabana Azmi in key roles. Let’s talk about its box office collections.
Right from the day when director Sanjay Gupta announced this film, there has been lots of buzz about the film among moviegoers. The ‘Jazbaa’ team has been doing the promotion activities for the past one month. The trailer and the songs have been appreciated by the audience. With these kind of marketing and the Aishwarya’s effect is going to set a perfect platform for the film to get a commendable start.
If ‘Jazbaa’ gets the support of the critics, it will probably collect around Rs 6-8 crore which is a very decent figure for this moderate budget film and also the most important positive for the film is that there is not any competition for the film till 22nd of October, when Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Shaandaar’ will hit the theatre.
Releasing on around 2200 screens, ‘Jazbaa’ will need the positive word of mouth to stay steady on the next two days. With the numbers coming of the advance bookings from the major circuits, it will finished around Rs 28-30 crore in its first weekend which is not bad figures for a women oriented film.
Last Friday released ‘Singh is Bling’ has done a mind boggling performance at the box office. Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson starrer has collected Rs 54.34 crore over its first weekend.
Prabhudheva directorial family comedy had started with a bang on Friday and raked Rs 20.67 crore. On Saturday, the numbers had come down to Rs 14.50 crore but Sunday showed an unbelievable rise and it had collected Rs 19.27 crore. So as expected, people had given a warm welcome to Akshay who has made his comeback in comedy after doing some serious performances in his last few films.
With this, ‘Singh is Bling’ has made some new records at the box office. First of all, this is the second highest weekend grosser of this year after Bajrangi Bhaijaan (Rs102 crore). This is Akshay Kumar’s highest ever first weekend record. He broke the record of his last release ‘Brothers’ (Rs 52.08 crore). This is also the highest grossing film for Prabhudheva who’s last film with Akshay; Rowdy Rathore had got Rs 48 crore in its first weekend.
After this fantastic weekend, now the real test of ‘Singh is Bling’ is come and it has to stay steady to reach the 100 crore mark which is quite possible for the film.
The other release of the week ‘Talwar’ despite its less known star cast has done a decent job at the box office. This Irrfan Khan starrer murder mystery has collected around Rs 9 crore over the weekend which is very good and according to the reviews.
The much awaited Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Singh is Bling’ has finally hit the screens and as expected the Prabhudheva directorial has done a fantastic business on its very first day. According to the earlier estimate, this action – comedy film has collected around Rs 20-22 crore on Friday.
Although, the exact figures are about to come, but with the occupancies around 60-70%, it would definitely become the biggest ever opening of Akshay Kumar. Till date, his highest day one grosser is Brothers (2015) that fetched Rs 15.10 crore on opening day. This will also be the biggest opening for Prabhudheva whose last two films were bombed at the box office.
However, ‘Singh is Bling’ got the mixed reviews by the film critics but the popularity of Akshay Kumar among his fans had never affected with this and come in good numbers. Due to the public holiday of Gandhi Jayanti, most of the shows got houseful throughout the days. This is one of the reasons of these big numbers. Also there is not much competition from the others releases of the week including murder mystery ‘Talwar’ and South Indian ‘Puli’.
Released with around 35oo screens, ‘Singh is Bling’ got the maximum footfalls from the north circuit specially Punjab, Delhi and Haryana where almost all the shows are going housefuls. This will also be the second biggest Friday of the year after ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’.
With this, Akshay Kumar’s dream is continue. This is his fourth release of the year and all his earlier films had done a decent business at the box office.
Now, the extended weekend is on the way and the coming two days would probably more better than this and it will heading towards Rs 40-45 crore weekend which is such a pleasing figures for the producers.
Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is again back with his next release ‘Singh is Bling’ which is hitting the screens on tomorrow. This is his fourth release of the year and also his second film with Prabhu Deva after Rawdi Rathore (2012). ‘Singh is Bling’ is an action-comedy which also stars Amy Jackson and Lara Dutta in pivotal roles.
This is also the acid test of Prabhu Deva, whose last two releases, including Action Jackson (2014) and Ramaiya Vastavaiya (2013) was big losers at the Box Office. The trailer and the songs are already out and got the positive response from the people. This is Akshay’s one of the dream years as his last three releases of the year was big grossers. Although, he is still waiting for his first 100 crore film but with the hype creating with ‘Singh is Bling’ and the extra promotion done by the star cast, it will probably hit that mark. The main thing about the film is Akshay Kumar is back with full fledged comic role, which is his strong point over the years. He is known for his talent of laughing the audiences.
The first day i.e. tomorrow would be a big day for ‘Singh is Bling’ as there is a National Holiday of Gandhi Jayanti and more and more people will come to entertain. Also the films releasing on Gandhi Jayanti, always got good starts like Bang Bang (2014) and Besharam (2013) which got the mindboggling opening at the box office.
With the way, the buzz is creating; the first day of ‘Singh is Bling’ would surely get around Rs 18-20 crore which is a very good total for the producers. This will also be the Akshay’s biggest opening affair. Till now, his biggest opener was ‘Brothers’ with Rs 15.10 crore.
If it gets this kind of opening on day one, then it will get the good numbers in the next two days also and the weekend collections would be around Rs 40 crore.
There is one more film is releasing with ‘Singh is Bling’. Irrfan Khan starrer ‘Talwar’ that is based on the famous double murder case of Noida. This Megna Guljar directorial has not got much attention and it will not affect the collections of Akshay Kumar starrer because of its genre. Both the films are totally different from each other.
Last Friday, the much anticipated film ‘Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon’ was released. It was the debut of popular comedian turned actor Kapil Sharma and as expected, the people are enjoying this Abbas-Mastan comedy drama. The positivity is reflected by the weekend box office collections. It had collected around Rs 29 crore in its first weekend.
‘Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon’ had started with good occupancies around 40-45% on Day one. With the popularity of Kapil among the masses in small screen and enough promotion had done the work for the film and it collected Rs 10.15 crore which have been just extraordinary for a debutant. The other main reason of this kind of numbers is the Eid holiday which added some crores in its kitty.
Day two i.e. Saturday although affected with the mixed reviews from the film critics but due to the good mouth publicity and the comedy factor managed it to get Rs 8.60 crore which is too good apart from a slight drop.
Sunday was the best day for the film and according to the early reports, it collected around Rs11.50 crore on its third day which is simply phenomenal amount. So its first weekend collections is around Rs 29-30 crore and it will surely be the pleasing figures for the Producers and Kapil Sharma is too happy to get this kind of response from the audience.
Now, we are eagerly waiting to see that whether it maintains the same pace in its weekdays or will see a big drop. The other two releases of the week including ‘Calendar Girls’ and ‘Bhaag Johnny’ have not picked up well in the weekends.
