The year started off with Akshay Kumar starrer Airlift, which was based on a real-life event of the biggest ever evacuation of the Indians from war prone Kuwait. Made with the budget of around Rs 40 crores ($6.01 million), Airlift had finished its lifetime run at the box office with Rs 127.80 crores ($19.21 million) and became one of the most profitable movies of 2016.

Airlift was also first 100 crore grosser of 2016 and enjoyed the title of the highest-grossing Bollywood movie of the year for 6 months before Salman Khan’s Sultan surpassed its lifetime collections in July.

In February, Sonam Kapoor had come up with an intense film Neerja, which was also a real life film based on flight attendant Neerja Bhanot, who lost her life in a plane hijack by the terrorists. Neerja received a wonderful response from the audience and moved to the top spot in the most profitable Bollywood movies of 2016.

The next movie is Karan Johar’s family drama Kapoor and Sons that featured Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, and Fawad Khan. With  the cost of production, the film was made with Rs 37 crores ($5.56 million) and with the superb response from the people, it brought in its numbers to Rs 75.05 crores ($11.28 million), means profit is more than double its making cost.

Below, we are providing you the list of Top 5 most profitable Bollywood movies of 2016.

Box office: Ki and Ka finishes its first week with a bang

Arjun Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Ki and Ka has finished its first week at the Indian box office. As expected the film has shown a fantastic hold in this maiden week. On 1st Thursday, it has collected Rs 2.68 crore and ends its first week with Rs 37.57 crore.

With this, R. Balki’s directorial venture has become 7th highest grosser of 2016 and also 3rd best week one of 2016 taking over Neerja (Rs 35.32 crore) and Ghayal Once Again (Rs34.25 crore). Even after the first week, numbers of shows had not got down and the footfall is even better and better with every passing day. The film has on an average of Rs 2 crore throughout the week that is very commendable thing. For Arjun and Kareena, one more hit has been added to their list and filmmakers will seriously take this pair to cast in the upcoming films.

Now the second weekend is about to come and once again the numbers of Ki and Ka will surely rise as there is not any major release this week apart from Love Games that is a low affair film and will not impact the performance of Ki and Ka.

The next big target of Ki and Ka is to get closer to 50 crore mark and within 3 to 4 days, this milestone would also under the belt.

However, the dream run of Sonam Kapoor starrer Neerja is continuing. The film has come into its 8th week and still running in some of the screens. So far, it has collected Rs 75.52 crore which is simply amazing numbers. Kapoor and Sons has collected Rs 71.57 crore in three weeks

Rocky Handsome 5 days box office collections

John Abraham starrer Rocky Handsome has an average day on its 1st Tuesday at the domestic box office. It has collected Rs 1.74 crore and crossed Rs 20 crore mark after 5 days of its release.

With this, Nishikant Kamat directorial action-thriller has now become 10th highest grosser of this year overshadowed Aditya Roy Kapoor and Katrina Kaif starrer Fitoor which had collected Rs 18.61 crore in its lifetime run.

Rocky Handsome is facing a tough competition from two weeks old Kapoor and Sons and Hollywood superhero flick Batman vs Superman.  Kapoor and Sons is still running fantastic on its 3rd week. With Rs 1.70 crore coming in on Tuesday, it has now collected Rs 62.52 crore and the way it is going, it might cross the numbers of Neerja (Rs 76 crore) by the end of next week.

Day by Day, the collections of Rocky Handsome are getting down which is not a good sign for the makers. The task of good performance will further test as after two days from here R. Balki’s Ki and Ka to be hit the screens which will surely affect the numbers of Rocky Handsome.

Box Office: Kapoor and Sons maintains its pace on 2nd Friday

Sidharth Malhotra, Ali Bhatt and Fawad Khan starrer Kapoor and Sons has performed brilliantly on its second week at the domestic box office. On Friday it had collected Rs 4.40 crore and with this, the film has reached to the total of Rs 51.33 crore that is a phenomenal numbers for this Karan Johar family-drama.

This Shakun Batra directorial hasn’t affected with John Abraham’s yesterday released action-thriller Rocky Handsome and still found a decent number of footfalls even after the end of second week. This is due to the tight story supported by some fantastic work from the starcast.

Still it has two more big days to get in some more crores in the kitty and to reach close to Rs 60 crore at the end of second weekend. Kapoor and Sons has already become third biggest grosser of the year surpassing Wazir (Rs 42 crore). Now it is only behind Airlift (Rs127.80 crore) and Neerja (Rs 73 crore).

Although, it is almost impossible to match up with Airlift’s total but Kapoor and Sons might cross Neerja but for that it has to be steady in its third week and it’s an uphill task to get.

Box office: Teraa Surroor struggles on 1st Tuesday, gets closer to 10 crore

Himesh Reshammiya’s Teraa Surroor is now showing a moderate drop in its box office collections. On its 1st Tuesday, the film had earned Rs 1.27 crore and taking its toll to Rs 9.11 crore. It is clearly seen that this sequel of Aap Ka Surroor is facing really tough time and struggling to get closer to its cost of production.

However, Teraa Surroor is made with the budget of around Rs 15 to 20 crores and with this pace it is very difficult for this romantic-thriller to surpass these numbers. After the negative reviews, the world of mouth is also not even better which could push the audience towards theatre. The numbers of screens are also going lesser as the footfalls is continue to dip down.

Now, there is not much left for Teraa Surroor to take relief from here before just after two days, Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt starrer Kapoor and Sons is waiting for the day to hit the screens and it would surely eclipse Teraa Surroor from the screens.

Box office predictions: ‘Fitoor’ has an upper hand on ‘Sanam Re’

This is certainly a special week for Bollywood. Valentine week is in full swing and there are two romantic films releasing on this lovely week. Abhishek Kapoor’sFitoor’ and Divya Khosla Kumar directorial ‘Sanam Re’. Without any doubt, ‘Fitoor’ has an upper hand on ‘Sanam Re’ and might become the biggest grossers of the years. Let’s find out how these two films will perform at the Indian Box office.

'Fitoor' and 'Sanam Re'
‘Fitoor’ and ‘Sanam Re’

Aditya Roy Kapoor and Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Fitoor’ is a romantic-drama based on Charles Dickens popular novel ‘Great Expectations’ directed by ‘Rock On!’ (2008) famed Abhishek Kapoor. This is one of the biggest film of this year which is made in a budget of around 40 crore. The promotions and advertisement costs is around Rs 10 -12 crores. The entire teams of the film including the leading stars have been rigorously promoting the film on various platforms across the country.

Its unique red theme posters have already created lots of buzz among the youngsters, who are ready to celebrate the festival of love. The songs composed by Hitesh Sonik and Amit Trivedi have been in the top lists which clearly show that ‘Fitoor’ will open pretty well at the box office.

It will release around 3000 screens in India and some 1500 screens in overseas market. With the way, it has been promoting and the presence of big star cast including Tabu, ‘Fitoor’ might collect in between Rs 10 to 15 crore on its first day and if it will get the support of film critics, the collections would surely increase on Saturday and Sunday. Anything around 30 plus crore weekend will please the makers but for that the mouth publicity should also in its favour.

On the other hand, Bhushan Kumar’s T –Series presenting ‘Sanam Re’ is also releasing tomorrow with ‘Fitoor’. This love triangle is directed by Divya Khosla Kumar, who had showed his guts with hit film ‘Yaariyaan’ (2014). The trio of Pulkit Samrat, Yami Gautam and Urvashi Rautela are the fresh talent of Bollywood and had been appreciated in their earlier films.

About the box office performance, ‘Sanam Re’ has to face a stiff competition with ‘Fitoor’ and lots of depends on the reviews by the critics. The first day collections would be around Rs 3 to 4 crore but for that mouth publicity will also matters. The first weekend of ‘Sanam Re’ would be around Rs 10 to 12 crore and it will scroll hard to get the decent numbers.

Box Office: ‘Ghayal Once Again’ has a moderate day one at the office

Sunny Deol starrer action packed film ‘Ghayal Once Again’ has yesterday hit the screens. This is the most ambitious film of Sunny, who has given his 2 years to this project, but Day one of the film at the box office was not upto the expectations of the makers. It has only collected Rs 7.20 crore, which is considered as a moderate start.

‘Ghayal Once Again’ is the sequel of Sunny’s 1990 hit action-drama ‘Ghayal’, that was the blockbuster. The makers have tried their best to co-relate this second installment with the earlier one, but they have failed to match up the similar heights what ‘Ghayal’ achieved. Although, Sunny this time has taken the extra responsibility of writing and direction of the film but the critics had not given positive response to this action-packed film.

On day one, the occupancies were around 40-50 percent and there was not seen any kind of buzz about Sunny’s film as it was happened earlier. Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Airlift’ is still strong after its 3rd week and giving tough fight to ‘Ghayal Once Again’. The other release of the week ‘Sanam Teri Kasam’ had got average reviews and done just par business on day one.

It has said that Sunny has invested a big amount of his life in making of this film and he had to mortgage his Mumbai studio for the film but the way day one went, it is not good news for Sunny as he had expected more than this.

Now, all eyes are on coming weekend which is very crucial for ‘Ghayal Once Again’ and Sunny. The collections would surely gone better and anything around Rs 30 crore plus weekend will ease the pressure from the distributors but for that, the film has to do exceptionally well in coming two days.

Box Office: ‘Airlift’ is steady on 2nd Monday

Raja Krishna Menon directorial ‘Airlift’ has entered into its third week but still it is showing a good growth at the box office. On its 2nd Monday, the film has collected Rs 2.53 crore from the Indian box office. Now, its total collection after 11 days is reached to Rs 105.29 crore.

This Akshay Kumar and Nimrat Kaur starrer film has already become a bumper hit of the year as it has crossed the 100 crore mark. The production cost of the film, which was around Rs 40 crore has already surpassed and now the film is on the way of receiving revenues.

Apart from the fantastic story, the mere presence of the superstar like Akshay is the reason for these wonderful numbers. This is also Akshay’s fourth film to enter 100 crore club.

Meanwhile, ‘Airlift’ has one more week to fetch as much as possible because Sunny Deol starrer action packed film ‘Ghayal Once Again’ is coming in this week, which might affect the collections of ‘Airlift’.

Box office: ‘Airlift’ crossed 100 crore, becomes 4th film of Akshay Kumar to enter this club

Akshay Kumar starrer ‘Airlift’ has finally entered in the most prestigious 100 crore club on 10th day of its release. On Sunday, the film has collected around Rs 8.26 crore and reached to the figure of around Rs 102.76 crore. This has now made another mark for ‘Khiladi’ Kumar and has become his 4th film to reach this coveted milestone of 100 crore club.

'Airlift' crossed 100 crores
‘Airlift’ crossed 100 crores

Although, ‘Airlift’ is not a hardcore commercial film, rather than it is niche drama based on the real incident related to the Iraq-Kuwait war, but the lone presence of superstar Akshay Kumar and his finest performance has turned the fortunes of the film. With 100 crore under the belt, this is Akshay’s 4th film to surpassed this mark after ‘Housefull 2’ (2012), ‘Rowdy Rathore’ (2012) and ‘Housefull 2’ (2012). His last year’s released crime-thriller ‘Baby’ (Rs 95 crore) has just short by few crores to get passed 100 crore.

Raja Krishna Menon directorial ‘Airlift’ is still strong at the box office and seen a good number of footfalls after the end of week two. The main reason behind this is the poor show by the other releases of the week. While, R.Madhavan starrer ‘Saala Khadoos’ hasn’t hold good and just managed to collect 2 crores odd (Hindi version) on Sunday and reached to Rs 6 crore in its first weekend, Sunny Leone adult-comedy ‘Mastizaade’ has also seen the expected fallout after a good opening on Friday.

Now, after achieving this milestone, it is interesting to see how far it will go from here and finished its lifetime collections. Still, it has one more week to fetch as more as possible.

Meanwhile, Akshay’s dream run has continued at the box office. After giving 3 back to back hits, all eyes are now on his upcoming films which include ‘Housefull 3’ and ‘Rustom’.

1st Day box office collections of ‘Mastizaade’ and ‘Saala Khadoos’

Milap Zaveri’s adult-comedy ‘Mastizaade’ has seen an average show on day one at the domestic box office. This Sunny Leone starrer film has collected around Rs 5.59 crore, which is a moderate start whereas the other release of the week ‘Saala Khadoos’ is on the lower side and collected only Rs 1.28 crore that is surely not expected from the makers.

Despite from poor reviews by the critics, ‘Mastizaade’ has still managed to do well. The reason for this average show at the box office is only hot and sizzling Sunny Leone who is in dual characters and the fans of Sunny are coming in good numbers to watch this controversial film. The occupancies throughout the day were hanged in between 40-45% and people still prefer ‘Airlift’ which is steady on its second week. Although ‘Mastizaade’ has full week to get on but Saturday and Sunday is very crucial for the film and might be the decider for the fate of the film.

On other side, Sports-drama ‘Saala Khadoos’ has failed to perform even better and the first day collections of the film is just only 1.28 crore which is certainly not expected from this Raju Hirani’s productions. R. Madhavan is playing the role of a boxing coach and his good performance hasn’t enough to get in more people. Lesser numbers of screens (575 in India for the Hindi version) is also a very big factor for this below par figures. Now, all depends on word of mouth.
